Story: I took my 25 year old son up to Bay De Noc for a day of spearing. He is 25 yrs. old and has been spearing since he was 10 yrs. old, but he has never seen anything over 30". We were going to sit in a friend's shack, but upon arriving we found out he had his twin shack there with a different lock on it than I had a key for. I called him, and he apologized and told me to cut the lock off. I told him I couldn't do that, but luckily I had thrown my tent in "just in case". We decided to go to my old "honey hole" instead, and were soon cut in a mere 45 minutes later than originally hoped. My son has never speared deep water before and lost a 30" fish earlier in the morning that was speared in the tail. He was feeling pretty badly about wounding a fish. I explained that it was tough spearing in deep water (he had never been in this area before), and with only 1 tine in it, the fish would probably be fine. We saw 2 more smaller fish after that and were thrilled when one of them bit the decoy twice. A little while later, this behemoth came out of nowhere and slammed the decoy - scaring us both. The fish took off and was under the ice when my son threw. I thought he missed him, but soon I heard Josh begin to hyper-ventilate, and begin saying "oh, my God, oh, my God". Before I could say, don't pull her in, I'll get the gaff, he pulled her inside the shanty. Now we're struggling with a huge fish, 2 adults, and a dog cramped inside a tent. I grabbed the fish's snout while my son tried to open the tent. Soon he got it open and started pulling the fish out, and dragging me with it. I looked down and saw that in his excitement he had also speared my pants leg. I yelled to wait, until I could get the now-struggling fish off my leg. Soon we were able to grab our composure and get the fish out of the tent. We acted like a couple of "Dumb and Dumbers" hugging each other and knocking ourselves to the ice. Finally a fishermen came over laughing. "I had to see what all the fuss was about", was all he could say. He took our picture, and congratulated us. We packed up, stopped for a quick toast, and drove immediately to the taxidermist. It was one of the greatest "Father/Son Moments" anyone could ever have! (Submitted by Josh's Dad).
