Entry #10 (2012-02-08 02:36:49) tad whitmireSpecies: Northern Pike Length: 40" Catch Date: 2012-02-05 12:30:00 Catch Location: atlanta, michigan Method: Spear Bait: red and white homemade Story: 35 years ago I went spearing with my grandfather for the first time. I've dreamed of seeing a 40 inch pike coming into the hole ever since. Superbowl sunday I set up and sat for a couple of hours without seeing a fish. Discouraged, I cut a new hole and moved about 100 yds over. An hour later a nice pike in 36" range came in and grabbed my decoy, I rushed and bounced the spear off its head. I had just missed probably my biggest pike. But I stayed optimistic that the pike might return. Twenty minutes later I thought it had, coming in right under my feet. I did not miss this time. Pulling the fish out of the hole I realized it was much bigger than I thought. Upon further inspection, it was actually a different pike, my first 40 incher.
Entry #8 (2012-01-30 16:45:35) Lindsay CreanSpecies: Northern Pike Length: 26" Catch Date: 2012-01-28 15:30:00 Catch Location: Oakland Co. MI Method: Spear Bait: 11\" live sucker Story: My husband took me spearing for the first time this year. 20 minutes into our sit, he tells me a pike is coming and that it's big enough to spear. It was awesome seeing the pike stalk the decoy. As the pike entered the hole, I quietly stood and lowered the tines into the water. My husband told me I could throw the Darkhouse spear hard and still have it fly accurately, so I gave it a good throw and watched it bury into my first pike ever!!! I don't know who was more excited, me or my husband! I can't wait to go again!
Entry #6 (2012-01-10 11:15:42) Andy HouseySpecies: Northern Pike Length: 42" Catch Date: 2012-01-09 01:30:00 Catch Location: Northern MN Method: Spear Bait: black and orange 10\" and 16\" sucker decoys Story: After having a good year of spearing with my friend in which we got to see my son get his first fish spearing and we had already gotten two 37",one 38",one 39" we had already had fun. Going out on another excursion with two dogs who knew things could only get better. After a day of sitting seeing only three small ones it was time to eat some polish. As we were sitting there I gave the decoy a jig when a nice fish made a fast pass at it not knowing how big it was, it hit the decoy so we put a large sucker decoy down along with the one it hit and after a couple minutes it came back in nice and slow. Coming in like a dream it made it into the hole when I got him. Not knowing how big it was until we got it outside and then we know it was over forty. Even better yet its nice to get all these fish on decoys you make yourself! Good luck and have fun!
Entry #5 (2012-01-10 08:25:22) Tyler HouseySpecies: Northern Pike Length: 28" Catch Date: 2011-12-29 08:37:00 Catch Location: Northern MN Method: Spear Bait: red and white decoy 10\" Story: Hi my name is Tyler Housey I am 10 years old and here is my story. After being in school and seeing my dad go spearing a couple of times and coming home with a 37 and 38 inch pike it was my turn to go. Looking for my first fish to spear I was pretty excited. My dads friend Chris and my sister were along so I was hoping that if we saw one that I would get it. We took the four wheeler across the lake to the spot we wanted to be. After cutting the hole and setting up the house we started to get settled in. My dad was getting the heater going and my sister was helping him and I was helping Chris with the decoy. We decided that it would be a red and white one about 10inches long. He started to put the decoy down and right away one came up at it splashing water in the house, and it was gone just like that. I thought it was all over and then Chris said here he comes again. So my dad gave me the spear and I put the head in the water and gave it all I had. Right away I knew I got him and it was my first norhern on a spear! Now I cant wait to go again!
Entry #4 (2012-01-09 10:14:07) Tyson WoodsSpecies: Northern Pike Length: 32" Catch Date: 0001-08-12 00:00:00 Catch Location: Seeley Lake, MT Method: Spear Bait: Bear Creek Sucker 8\" Story: This was my second day out spearing ever. I just got my spear the week before and had to try it out. I made it to the lake before light to get set up. 2 hours into the day, my heater stopped working. I figured I would stay until my hole started freezing over. After an hour, I finally got the heater working on the lowest setting. I was almost done eating my sandwich and putting the bag behind me in my bucket. When I looked back, this guy was about a half inch from the tail of my decoy giving it the stare down. I quickly dropped my sandwich and got the spear in the water just as the fish was leaving my hole. "I missed my chance", I was thinking. I gave my decoy a little jiggle and he came right back in. Without hesitation, I sent the spear down 8 feet and and nailed my first fish with a spear. What a day. Just over 8.5 pounds and 32" long. I love this sport!
Entry #3 (2011-12-17 21:26:16) Doug WagnerSpecies: Northern Pike Length: 29" Catch Date: 0000-00-00 00:00:00 Catch Location: Menominee County, MI Method: Spear Bait: 7 inch custom made fire tiger Story: Last year i finally got my dad in a dark house shack with me and my best friend. My friend is the one who introduced me to spearing. Earlier that day we saw 7 pike and had speared two. Dad got to the shack late and we didn't see a thing the rest of the day. I swore to him that this method of taking pike is lots of fun and exciting but it was a hard sell considering he hadn't seen anything the time he spent in the shack. So finally a year later on our first time out for the year, using my first Dave Pawlak spear, the first time using my new Eskimo quickfish 3, and jigging with the first decoy i've ever carved, about 15 minutes into the day this nice fish came in perfect. After a beautiful throw my dad got his first dark house fish. I didn't stop shaking for half an hour. Not the biggest fish, but one that i will remember for the rest of my life.
Entry #1 (2011-12-14 18:36:07) Mike KittSpecies: Northern Pike Length: 41" Catch Date: 0000-00-00 00:00:00 Catch Location: Tributary off Menominee River - Menominee Co. Method: Spear Bait: home made \"Fire Tiger\" chub decoy Story: My spearing partner and I had talked about and located this spot on the last day of spearing season last year, and we have been "chomping at the bit" for 1st ice ever since. We sat together on the 12th and saw 15 fish in 2 hrs. and 10 min. - ranging in size from about 17" to about 38". We did not throw at any of those fish because we knew the areas potential. Neither of us could go on the 13th, and my partner could not go on the 14th, so I went by myself. I started jigging at 9:00, using a "Fire Tiger" chub I finished making about a month ago. I was fishing on the edge of a river channel in about 5 ft. of water, right on the edge of a weed line. This decoy attracted 13 out of 15 fish 2 days earlier. At 9:05 this "Behemouth" charged in and grabbed my decoy! It turned on it's side with the decoy still in its mouth and I threw out of "pure instinct" before I had a chance for "The Fever" to set in. I hit the fish in the side instead of in the back, but made a good hit. I pulled the fish in still disbelieving what had just happened. I pulled it out of the shack and sat down immediately, shaking like a leaf. I called my partner, and everyone else I could think of. This was the biggest fish I have taken in 25 years of spearing - the one I have been searching for all that time! I had finally broken the 40" mark! After hearing the news, my partner asked if I could stay there for a couple of hours, and drove from 60 miles away to take my picture (I had forgotten to bring a camera). After having helped my son get his "Fish of a Lifetime" last year, the "Big Man" must have decided it was my turn!
